Volunteer Steering Committee

Easter Seals West Alabama’s Volunteer Steering Committee assists with three fundraisers each year, The Mall Ball, the Holiday Ornament Sale, and Easter Seals “Walk With Me”. The Mall Ball is held each spring, usually in April, the Ornament Sale begins the first of November and goes through the end of the holiday season, and “Walk With Me” is held in the fall.

These fundraisers are vital to our programs at Easter Seals. Past proceeds have been used to purchase specialty equipment, a wheelchair ramp van, economy vehicles to assist in delivery of services to the eight counties we serve, to renovate the outpatient rehabilitation department, and to provide free and reduced-fee services to those who qualify.

All of our fundraisers are volunteer driven. Contact Easter Seals for more information on how you can volunteer. Together, we are creating solutions that change lives for our West Alabama neighbors.

"West Alabama Memories” Holiday Ornament

Your purchase of the 2007 limited edition of our “West Alabama Memories” Holiday ornament supports Easter Seals West Alabama mission to create solutions and change lives of children and adults with disabilities or other special needs.

This is the thirteenth in a series to honor the southern beauty and tradition found in historic landmarks in West Alabama.

Bama Theatre

In 1938, the Bama Theatre served as the community's grand movie house, as well as the only air-conditioned building at that time. The theatre was one of the last movie palaces built in the South. The building was an odd but interesting mixture of Art Deco style popular during the period and the lavish so-call "atmospheric" style of theatre architecture popular in the 1920’s. The interior is decorated in the Moorish style of Renaissance Spain. The house of the theatre is actually a reproduction of the courtyard of the Davanzati Palace of Florence, Italy. The entire orchestra and balcony sections are decorated as a Spanish courtyard, complete with balconies and ironwork. Twinkling stars and clouds on the night sky ceiling complete the open-air feel of the performance hall. The Theatre was converted to a performing arts center in 1976 and has been completely renovated for live theatrical use.

In the Summer of 1999, yet another dimension of entertainment was added, as the Bama Theatre once again began showing films. The Cinema Nouveau series features award-winning independent and foreign films, making the Bama Theatre downtown Tuscaloosa's visual and performing arts center.

About the artist: Mike Andrews

We are grateful to Becky Andrews and Lee and Ovella Andrews for donating Mike’s drawing of the Bama Theatre for the ornament design. Mike Andrews is best known for his ink drawings and watercolors of historic buildings and homes in Alabama. His work can be seen in many corporate and private collections across the South. Self-taught with the help of his father, Jack, he worked with art from an early age to achieve his own distinctive style. We would like to dedicate this year’s ornament to Mike’s memory. He was a wonderful husband, father, son, and a faithful supporter of Easter Seals West Alabama.

West Alabama Community Helps Make
Easter Seals 1st Annual Walk With Me Fundraiser
a Huge Success

The Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff of Easter Seals West Alabama would like to thank the community for your overwhelming support of our first annual Easter Seals Walk With Me fundraiser on September 8.

Sheriff Ted Sexton and Coach Jim Wells did an excellent job serving as our honorary chairpersons. We appreciate the support of our sponsors: Bryant Bank, Mercedes-Benz, N.C. Morgan Construction, Alabama 1st Capital Credit Union, CVS Pharmacy, Jones Media Productions, Alagasco, Jim Walter Resources, Southland National Insurance Corporation, Tuscaloosa Civitan Club, Catfish 102.9, and Tuscaloosa Blueprinting & Reprographics. Thank you also to Publix, Krispy Kreme, Chic-Fil-A, Big Lots, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Food World, Winn-Dixie, Bama Ice, and Heritage House Coffee for providing snacks and beverages for our walkers.

A special thank you to the Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue Squad, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Tuscaloosa Police Department for ensuring the safety of our walkers. The Hillcrest High School and Holy Spirit Cheerleaders provided just the right spirit and enthusiasm to keep the walkers at top pace. The set up and clean up would not have been possible without the assistance of the young men from Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternities. Alpha Chi Omega Sorority also assisted with the walk.

We look forward to Walk With Me 2008 and hope you will join the fun!

Thank you to our sponsors of the first annual Tuscaloosa Easter Seals Walk With Me:
