Social Security Representative Payee Program

WHO does this program serve?

Recipients of Social Security (SSI or SSDI) who have been determined to need someone to manage their money.

WHAT does this service provide and what is the cost?

Money management, bill paying, budgeting, and referrals to other needed services. The fee for this service is set by the Social Security Administration (SSA) at $34 per month and is paid by the consumer to Easter Seals West Alabama. We do not provide case management. If a consumer has a case manager, we work closely with this individual to coordinate services and payments.

WHEN can a person get help?

After being approved for Social Security or anytime after benefits start, a consumer, their family or the SSA may request a payee. Forms may be completed at Easter Seals West Alabama so that a trip to the Social Security office is not necessary.

WHERE are these services located?

The Social Security Representative Payee office is located at Easter Seals West Alabama. Banking services are provided by National Bank of Commerce in Tuscaloosa, and checks may be cashed at any of their locations.

WHY is this service necessary?

To make sure that the consumer’s basic needs for shelter and food are met and that their bills are paid in a timely fashion. Benefits may then be used for personal needs or medical services not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

HOW does one get a payee?

Contact Carolyn Bolton at 205.759-1211 ext. 261 or 250.
